Poongar rice is an traditional unpolished red rice variety. The rice in grown the Southern parts of India. Mainly in the state of Tamilnadu in Ramanadhapuram and sivagangai. It is also called women’s rice it is to be helpful in women after puberty, this rice is believed to avert ailments associated with reproductive system. Especially beneficial to pregnant women and lactating mothers. It has a reddish brown appearance due to presence of anthocyanin pigments. Great for making idlis, dosas, idiyappam, puttu, kanji even in sweets like payasam. Duration of 85 to 100 days to fully mature for harvesting and its height 3.5 feet.
